Monday Musing: Scarf Tying for Winter

I’ve been telling my clients for years to wear winter scarfs to keep their necks warm. I know, I sound like your mother. I can’t help it. I see cold people walking around like turtles with their necks tucked into their chest and shoulders pulled up to their ears. All that scrunching causes stiff necks and shoulders. Here are some fun and warm scarf tying ideas. Keep warm and stay comfortable.

Stretch of the Week: Anterior/Front Neck Stretch

We spend so much of our time tucking our chin to our chest (reading, computer, watching TV) the muscles at the front of our neck are tight. In my classes this stretch is known as the “Scarlett O’Hara”. Try it!

Weekend Warrior: Freezing at the football games?

Are you sitting at football games this fall? It doesn’t matter if it’s Big 10 (Go Blue!) or middle school games, it is cold out there. When we’re cold we tend to draw our shoulders up to our ears to keep our necks warm and we wind up with stiff necks and tight shoulders. Try these two stretches as you sit on the bleachers and remember to bring a scarf!

Monday Musing: Fall Classes

Fall is in the air and to me that means: Jackets, pumpkin donuts, falling leaves, stiff necks and sore shoulders. The transition to fall and the cooler weather activities can leave some people sore. Shivering in lighter coats and leaf raking are the two worst offenders. What is the cure? Stretching of Course! Check out the classes starting next week, September 27th. Monday Musing: Shorter or longer?

The question is: Should the videos be shorter? Some people like being able to do the stretches with me and others think I should demonstrate the stretch and leave it at that. What do you think?

This neck warm up has been the most popular video so far.

Weekend Warrior: Surrender

This weekend I will drag out the lawn furniture and plop myself down in my lounge chair to read my old copies of The Elements of Style ( Ktronk and White) and Write Right! (Venolea). This weeks Monday Musing caused a grammatical crisis that I must deal with this weekend. I must either use the number 2 (as in text messaging) or learn the difference between to, too, two…….what shall I do?

I digress, the point of Weekend Warrior is to help you survive your weekend activities in the best health possible. Sitting in the sun, couch or bed to read can cause neck and low back pain. Ensure comfort and correct posture by sitting upright with your bottom all the way back in your seat. Place a pillow under your knees to protect your low back and place a pillow on your lap to prop your book up. Raising the level of your book will cut down on your neck strain. Now you are ready to read, be sure 2 enjoy your weekend!
