Weekend Warrior: Dark thoughts

The pressure is building as I enter week 5 of training for the Susan G Kolman 60 mile Walk for a Cure. I’m having dark thoughts about walking all 60 of the miles, I can’t break past the 14 mile mark without getting blisters. Great shoes, fitted? Check. $10 a pair socks? Check. Glide or Vaseline? Check. Moleskin? Check. The latest suggestion was to put duck tape on my feet before I walk. Maybe that will work. Duck tape is great for everything. Dark thoughts be gone; keep the love coming.

Weekend Warrior: taking it easy

As most of my Stretching Buddies know, I’ve been training for the 60 mile 3 day Susan G Kolman walk for the cure. I have hit a brick wall in my training. I can’t seem to get past the 14 mile walking mark without blisters! I have used $10 socks, 2 socks, glide, moleskin, and new shoes. Every Weekend Warrior needs to know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. I am taking this week off to heal my 2 inch blister on my left foot. I’ll be off next week white water rafting in WV. If I survive that I’ll be back to walking and training the 4 th of July weekend. As the saying goes: Show up. Suit up. Keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Weekend Warrior: Stretch for the Cure

For those of you who don’t know, I’m walking in the Susan G Kolman Walk for the Cure, 60 miles in 3 days. I’ve been walking for the past 57 years, so I thought with a little will power and some training it was in the bag. Boy was I wrong! I’m in week 14 of a 24 week training plan and it’s a struggle. It’s not so much the walking, which is getting more intense (up to 10 miles at a time) it’s the time it takes to do all the walking. I spent about 11 hours walking this week and with my workshop stretching fund raisers it is beginning to feel like a full time job (did I mention the 2 times a week cross training for 2 hours?). Don’t get me wrong, I am enjoying the challenge and the cause is good. It’s just more than I thought it would be. It has brought to my attention all the folks out there that train year round for competitive sports. Before this challenge I walked 4 times a week 2-3 miles, I hope I keep these greater distances up. Walking is so good for you!
